How This Calculator Works

Pesticide and herbicide labels state a rate, and getting it wrong is both ineffective and unsafe - too little fails to control the pest and breeds resistance, too much is illegal, phytotoxic, and an environmental hazard. Labels express the rate one of two ways: as concentrate per gallon of finished spray (you mix to the tank's water volume), or as concentrate per 1,000 sq ft of treated area (you mix enough to cover the ground you will spray). This calculator handles both: for a per-gallon rate it multiplies by your tank size; for a per-area rate it uses your treatment area and how much ground one tank covers to work out the concentrate per tank, plus how many tankfuls the whole job needs.

Formula / Method

Per-gallon mode: concentrate per tank = label rate × tank volume (gallons). Simple and water-volume based. Per-area mode: rate per square foot = label rate ÷ 1000; concentrate per tank = rate per sq ft × the area one full tank covers; total concentrate for the job = rate per sq ft × total area; tanks needed = ceiling(total area ÷ coverage per tank). The per-area method is calibration-dependent - "coverage per tank" is how many square feet your sprayer actually empties one tank over at your walking speed, which you measure once. Inputs that are blank, negative, or a non-positive tank/area/coverage are rejected so no division by zero or NaN occurs.

Worked Example

Per gallon: label says 2 oz per gallon, you have a 4-gallon backpack sprayer. Concentrate per tank = 2 × 4 = 8 oz into 4 gallons of water. Per area: label says 2 oz per 1,000 sq ft, you must treat 2,000 sq ft, and you have calibrated that one full tank sprays out over 1,000 sq ft. Rate per sq ft = 2÷1000 = 0.002 oz. Concentrate per tank = 0.002 × 1000 = 2 oz. Total concentrate for the job = 0.002 × 2000 = 4 oz, requiring ceiling(2000÷1000) = 2 tankfuls, each carrying 2 oz of product.

Common Mistakes

Confusing a per-gallon rate with a per-area rate - they are completely different and mixing them up over- or under-doses badly.

Skipping sprayer calibration: the per-area method is only as good as your measured "coverage per tank."

Mixing more than you will use - leftover diluted spray is hard to store and a disposal problem.

Eyeballing small ounce amounts; use a dedicated measuring cup, never kitchenware, and never round up "for good measure."

Ignoring the label's maximum rate and re-treatment interval - the label is the law and this tool does not enforce it.
