Stride Length Calculator

Estimate your walking or running stride length from height and sex, or measure it from a known distance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an average stride length?

Walking stride is roughly 0.76 m (2.5 ft) for men and ~0.67 m (2.2 ft) for women on average, but it varies with height, leg length, speed, and terrain. Height-based estimates use a factor of ~0.413–0.415 × height.

How do I measure my stride accurately?

Mark a known distance (e.g. 20 m or 50 ft), walk it naturally, and count your steps. Stride = distance ÷ steps. Averaging 2–3 trials improves accuracy versus a height formula.

What is the difference between stride and step length?

Step length is heel-to-heel of opposite feet; stride length is one full cycle (same foot to same foot) and equals two steps. Many calculators and trackers use "stride" loosely to mean one step - this tool reports step-based stride for step counting.

Does stride change with speed?

Yes. Walking faster lengthens stride and raises cadence; running stride is typically 1.4–1.6× walking stride. Use a walking measurement for step-counting accuracy and a running measurement for run distance.
