What is an azimuth?
The compass bearing from one point to another, measured clockwise from north (0°-360°).
How is great-circle distance different from straight-line?
Great-circle is the shortest path along the Earth's surface. Straight-line through the planet would be even shorter but useless for navigation.
Why decimal degrees?
Easier than degrees-minutes-seconds for math. 40° 42' 46" N ≈ 40.7128.
Azimuth vs bearing vs heading: what is the difference?
Azimuth and true bearing mean essentially the same thing here: an angle measured clockwise from north, 0° to 360°, toward a target. In everyday navigation "bearing" is the more common word. Heading is different - it is the direction a vehicle or aircraft is actually pointed, which can differ from its bearing to a destination because of wind or current drift. Note the reference too: this calculator uses true north, while a magnetic compass reads a magnetic bearing offset by the local declination.
