Button Spacing Calculator

Evenly space buttons over a placket and find the gap and end distances

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I evenly space buttons on a placket?

Place the top and bottom buttons first, then divide the distance between them by (N − 1) gaps. For 6 buttons spanning 20 in between the first and last, spacing = 20 ÷ (6 − 1) = 4 in on center.

Where do the first and last buttons go?

On shirts, set the top button near the collar stand and place a button at the fullest bust point to prevent gaping, then distribute the rest evenly between. The bottom button usually sits a few inches above the hem.

How many buttons should a garment have?

It depends on length and style, but spacing of about 3–4 in between buttons is typical for shirts. Divide the placket length by your desired spacing and round to a whole number, then recompute exact spacing.

Why is the bust button so important?

A button placed at the apex of the bust resists the strain that causes the classic gap between buttons. Anchoring there first, then spacing the others, gives a clean, gap-free front.
