Knitting Gauge Calculator

Convert a knitting pattern to your gauge - cast-on stitches and rows needed for any target width and length

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adjust a pattern to my gauge?

Multiply the pattern stitch count by your gauge ÷ the pattern gauge. If the pattern says cast on 100 sts at 20 sts/4 in and you get 22 sts/4 in, cast on 100 × 22 ÷ 20 = 110 sts to keep the same finished width.

How big does my gauge swatch need to be?

Knit at least 6 × 6 in, wash and block as you will treat the finished piece, then measure stitches and rows in the middle 4 in × 4 in. Edges distort the count and unblocked swatches lie.

How do I match row gauge?

Multiply pattern rows by your row gauge ÷ pattern row gauge. For sleeves and shaped pieces, write the new row count next to each "increase every N rows" instruction so shaping still ends at the right length.

What if I can't hit gauge?

Change needle size: up one US size if you have too many stitches per inch, down one if too few. If gauge is right but fabric feels off, change yarn weight or pattern stitch - never just live with a wrong-gauge garment.
