Garment Fabric Yardage Calculator

Calculate fabric yardage for a garment from pattern pieces or a standard chart, by fabric width and waste allowance

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I estimate fabric yardage for a garment?

Use the pattern's yardage chart for your size and fabric width, or lay out the pattern pieces on a paper grid at the planned width and measure. A basic adult shirt is roughly 2–2.5 yds of 45 in or 1.75–2 yds of 60 in fabric.

Does fabric width really matter that much?

Yes. 60 in fabric typically needs about 25% less yardage than 45 in because large pieces fit side by side instead of end to end. Always pick the column matching your actual fabric width.

How much waste allowance should I add?

Add 10–15% for matching plaids, stripes or one-way prints; 5–10% for solids. Add an extra 1/4 yd for pre-wash shrinkage if the fabric has not been treated.

What if my pattern has no yardage chart?

Estimate by garment length: yardage ≈ (back length + sleeve length + hem allowances) ÷ 36 for 60 in fabric on a slim garment; double the back length for full skirts. Always round up to the next 1/4 yd.
