Frequently Asked Questions
How wide is fabric typically sold?
Quilting cotton: 42-44 in. Apparel fabrics: 54-60 in. Home decor and upholstery: 54-60 in. Always check listed width - 1 yard of 60-inch is much more fabric than 1 yard of 44-inch.
How much fabric for a basic dress?
A simple A-line knee-length dress in 60-inch fabric needs about 2 yards. Add 0.5 yard for sleeves, 1 yard for a full skirt. Pattern envelopes always state required yardage by size.
What is "with nap" yardage?
Napped fabrics (velvet, corduroy, directional prints) need all pieces cut in the same direction, which usually adds 0.25-0.5 yard. Pattern envelopes give both with-nap and without-nap amounts.
How do I convert meters to yards?
1 meter = 1.094 yards (about 39.4 inches). A 2-meter bolt is 2.19 yards. For most apparel projects, treat meters and yards as roughly interchangeable but round up to be safe.
