Yarn Quantity Calculator

Find the number of skeins or balls of yarn needed for a project from project area or total stitches

Frequently Asked Questions

How many skeins do I need for a project?

Estimate total yards from the pattern, then divide by yards per skein and round up. A 1,200 yd sweater in a 220 yd skein needs 1200 ÷ 220 ≈ 5.5, so buy 6 skeins of the same dye lot.

How do I estimate yards from project area?

For a known yarn weight, use approximate yards per square inch from a swatch: total yards ≈ project area (sq in) × swatch yards ÷ swatch area. A 4 in × 4 in swatch using 12 yds suggests 0.75 yd per sq in.

How do I estimate yards from stitch count?

Yards = total stitches × yards per stitch. Measure yards per stitch by unraveling a known number of stitches from your swatch: 40 unraveled sts that measure 80 in = 2 in/st = 0.056 yd/st, so a 20,000-st project needs ~1,120 yds.

Why buy an extra skein?

Dye lots vary noticeably, and running short forces hunting matching yarn months later. Add ~10% to your estimate, and keep the ball band so you can re-order the same lot if needed.
