Frequently Asked Questions
Why match yarns on yardage instead of weight?
Different fibers weigh different amounts per yard, so two skeins of the same gram weight can hold very different lengths. Yardage is what actually builds your fabric, so match on that.
Why round skeins up?
Buying a fractional skein is not possible, and rounding down would leave you short before the project is finished, so the calculator always rounds up to the next whole skein.
Should I buy an extra skein?
One spare is wise for gauge swatches, differences in your tension, and future repairs, especially since matching dye lots can sell out later.
What if the substitute is a different weight class?
A heavier or lighter yarn changes gauge and drape. Knit or crochet a gauge swatch first, because the yardage estimate assumes a similar stitch size.
